Export of rice from Russia

 Rice is both imported into Russia and exported abroad with a comparable scale. Now we will make a rapid analysis of the Russian export of rice on the basis of the customs database for the 1st half of 2016.

 

The share of Russia in the world's rice export is 1%. The customs statistics shows that the volumes of rice export from Russia dramatically increased in 2009 - from 24 000 tons to 93 000 tons. There are few main reasons:
•  government support programs (compensation of costs for land reclamation, electricity and elite seeds)
• introduction of significant duties on import, which increased the production volume;
• weakening of the national currency during the crisis of 2008-2009 that increased the attractiveness of export.
In 2016 rice export volume from Russia is expected to be 200-250 000 tons. Revenues for the first half of the year has already reached 37 million dollars.

Exports of rice from the Russian regions

Regional structure of rice export is the reflection of crop production localization in Russia. The majority comes from Krasnodarsky Krai - 74%. According to customs statistic, 16% is registered in Moscow and St. Petersburg - that is the consequence of exporters registration of in the big cities.

 

Export of Russia by country of destination

The main risks for the Russian rice exports lie in the structure of consumer countries. The most significant position among them is occupied by Turkey. This causes three problems:

• Turkish counterparts prefer to buy cheaper raw and upload their own processing facilities
• instability of political relations may negatively affect Russia's export into this country
• there is a risk of Russian suppliers’ displacement with Egyptian manufacturers. From 2007 to 2011 the Egyptians reduced the volume of supplies from 1 million tons to 80 thousand tons (due to water control program  in agriculture), but now this policy is revised . In addition, the cost of rice production in Egypt is lower than in Russia (production of similar kinds).
